Yarn crafts and that state of “flow”

When I am focused on the pattern, the stitches, and the skeins of yarn, when I feel the textures, when I see the rainbow of colours. When I think about the pattern and visualise the final outcome, Crochet takes me to a quiet place, where all the stress and worries disappear.

It is a state of complete absorption in the task in which the outside world seems to disappear, as attention is focused entirely on the task. It is clear that such a state could lead to a pleasant feeling of relaxation and joy in the work, a feeling of relief from stresses and anxieties.

That state is what I often call a state of “flow”. When we engage fully in an activity with repetitive motions, we engage in an experience similar to mindfulness or meditation.

Put simply, mindfulness is the act of focusing non-judgementally on what is happening in the present moment. You settle down enough to see your experience, thoughts, and emotions.

Crochet and Knitting are crafts that can be used to access that mindfulness.

Mindfulness is a process; its strength grows day by day. Practicing it through crochet or knitting helps to strengthen it.

Craft activities like crochet and knitting also result in tangible and often useful handmade products that can enhance your self-esteem. You will look back at that hat or that scarf and feel a beam of pride and accomplishment.

With all these good yarn crafting vibes around us I am really looking forward to teaching people to crochet and knit again. Let us hope this spring or summer I can resume our classes. In the meantime, stay safe and check my updates on Instagram and on the website.

Love yarn crafts!
